Field Vision Top 10 Corners for 2024
Our Top 10 Corners based on Field Vision's Proprietary Havoc Rating
As the Havoc Rating rankings roll on, some big names missed the cut in favor of corners that have shown consistent performance across the board. Remember, in Havoc, no play goes unnoticed, so it's not just the highlight reel plays that get accounted for.
Notable players like Tariq Woolen, who excelled in coverage, but has no interest in run defense, stayed off our list. Jalen Ramsey, who's been in and out of the lineup for several years couldn't crack our top 10, either. Trent McDuffie, who was the best pass rushing corner in the league, but struggled in man coverage, also fell short despite some potential recency bias if you watched the Super Bowl.
But enough about the guys who couldn't crack the top 10, here are Field Vision's top 10 corners heading into 2024:
Charvarius Ward, San Francisco 49ers (100)
Charvarius Ward had the best season of his career in 2023, in both the advanced metrics and traditional statistics. Ward recorded 5 interceptions while also leading the league with 23 passes defended in route to a 2nd team all-pro selection. He clocks in as a top 11 coverage corner in both zone and man especially excelling in zone coverage where he sits in the 99th percentile. Ward will have another season as a key cog on an excellent 49er unit.
Sauce Gardner, New York Jets (99.5)
With just two seasons under his belt, Sauce Gardner looks like he’ll be one of the best corners in football for years to come. His 2023 season showed a slight down tick from ’22 where he had the top raw Havoc score in the league, which may be the only reason he didn’t quite crack the very top of this list. Even so, Gardner is a top 5 zone corner back and the 2nd best man Havoc corner in the league according to our 2024 projections. With a couple of stacked offenses in the AFC East including Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins, the Jets will need Gardner at his best.
L’Jarius Sneed, Tennessee Titans (99.1)
L’Jarius Sneed parlayed 2 great seasons in a row into a new deal with the Tennessee Titans this off season. Sneed is a true all- around corner. He ranked in Havoc’s top 20 in man coverage, zone coverage, run defense and pass rush among corner backs. He has also shown versatility in the past spending time in the slot and on the outside. Sneed’s biggest impact to the Titans defense will be his ability shut down opposing Alpha’s receivers which will be key in a division where the favored Texans have plenty of fire power with the likes of Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins and Tank Dell.
Jaylon Johnson, Chicago Bears (98.6)
Jaylon Johnson led all corners in our 2023 raw Havoc score turning in by far the best season of his career in his fourth campaign with the Bears. Last year, he had 4 interceptions to go with 10 passes defended in route to the Pro Bowl and a 2nd team All Pro selection. He projects as to the top zone coverage corner in football heading into 2024 and with the Bears playing zone over 80 percent of the time last season, he’s likely to be a huge piece of that defense once again.
Rasul Douglas, Buffalo Bills (98.2)
While Douglas is not as elite in Man Coverage as most on this list, he is Havoc Rates’ 2nd best zone corner. 2023 was Douglas’ best season to date, but he has been near the top of our rankings for 3 years in a row accelerating his career when he moved to Green Bay in 2021. After getting shipped off to Buffalo last season, Douglas had 4 interceptions and 8 passes defended in just 9 games for the Bills. With the Bills playing zone 79 percent of the time last season, Douglas is primed to be a huge part of the Buffalo attack on defense.
Kendall Fuller, Miami Dolphins (97.7)
The Dolphins may have found one of the steals of free agency this off season in Kendall Fuller. Despite some aberrations in the traditional statistics, Fuller is coming off the best Havoc season of his career in 2023 where he ranked 5th among all corners in raw score. Fuller is ranked the 6th best corner in zone coverage for our 2024 projections and should be a more than adequate replacement for Xavien Howard opposite the bigger name corner, Ramsey. The Dolphins should be stellar in coverage on the outside against elite QB’s in the division like Josh Allen and Aaron Rodgers.
Kenny Moore II, Indianapolis Colts (97.2)
A corner doing most of his damage in the slot, Kenny Moore II had 68 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 3 interceptions last season. He ranked in the top 25 of Havoc in pass rush, run defense and zone coverage among corner backs. After a Pro Bowl campaign in 2021, Moore fell off a bit in ’22 but bounced back with a vengeance last season with the best raw Havoc score of his career. He will be a huge part of Gus Bradley’s heavy cover 3 scheme for the Colts this year, which they played the most in the league last season.
D.J. Reed, New York Jets (96.8)
D.J. Reed’s teammate, Sauce Gardner, being near the top of our rankings probably didn’t surprise a lot of people, but make no mistake about it, the Jets have two elite corners on their roster. His 2022 season was slightly better than last year, but Reed still falls just outside the top 10 in our overall man coverage rankings and he checks in at number 11 in run support. Having two top notch corners allowed the Jets to play the 8th most man coverage in the league last season and you can expect more of the same from the Saleh defense in 2024.
Taron Johnson, Buffalo Bills (96.3)
The Bills are the second team to put a pair of corners on this list with Taron Johnson joining Douglas. Johnson is the 2nd best run-stopping corner in the league according to 2024 projected Havoc rate. While he struggles some in man coverage, he is a more than capable coverage corner in zone. Paired with Douglas, the Bills will be dangerous in the secondary in their zone schemes. That’s good news since division rival Tua Tagovailoa generated the highest average EPA in the league against man coverage last season.
Devon Witherspoon, Seattle Seahawks (95.9)
Rounding out the top 10, Devon Witherspoon posted above average coverage rankings especially in zone projecting as a top 20 corner there, but he really excels in run defense and supplemental pass rushing. Witherspoon is top 10 in both, coming in as the 3rd best pass rushing corner in the league and the 7th best run defender. In 2023, he logged 79 tackles including 8 tackles for loss and 3 sacks in route to a pro bowl rookie season. In Mike McDonald’s new scheme in Seattle, expect Witherspoon to play fast and continue to make lots of plays in 2024.
Just missed the cut: Brian Branch, Mike Hilton, Trent McDuffie, Marshon Lattimore, Desmond King II
